What’s The end Goal?
In a world focused on optimization, what’s everyone racing toward?
Recently, I started working as a crossing guard to break up my new work-from-home schedule. Standing on the corner each day I have learned just how distracted we are. Drivers, pedestrians, e-bikes, all racing to get to the next place. But the biggest surprise is that this happens in the morning and the afternoon. Racing in and racing out. But for what?
The YouTube channel I started back in August just hit monetization, something I was racing toward, but never the end goal, just as it is with all of my work. A slow build, creating a lifetime of creations that you may not find for some time. But this was never the end, merely a beginning, just like a film’s arc. This is the inciting incident.
I started the channel to share what I had built inside of an institution of education. Teaching over 1,000 students showed me the power of an art form that forces you to think about the subconscious. Every still frame communicates something. Every script and real time experiment showing the complete creative process.
I never thought about it before, but seeing someone do something in real time is not really available on YouTube. I guess that’s why I leaned in. We are taught, or at least I was, to never show how it is made, to keep that to yourself. But I never felt fulfilled that way. As I saw new students exploring, I realized they were learning more from failure than success. I learned that it was never about the films or photographs. It was always about understanding who you are and the world you want to inhabit.
I think I want to inhabit one that slows down and enjoys the moments where there is no end goal. I have no clue where all this leads but I understand now that we only get one day, and I want to find out how to live that day with clarity, compassion, and kindness.
I want others to have a moment to smell the jasmine or watch the crows bicker on the line, both of which I had a chance to observe this morning. You might be asking, if there is no end goal, then what is the point? The point is to enjoy your life, share what brings you joy. If someone else tells you they hate it, you can decide whether or not to engage. Just know that most of the comments are directed at themselves, not at you, especially if your goal is to help someone.
Working with you while I make my next feature over the past school year, I focused on education tutorials, teaching you how to write scripts and edit your films. Now I am going to show what can be made this way.
Collaborations
Over the summer, you are going to find a lot of Bronson Presents shows that are made by other people, shows about other topics, things that may not even relate to film. The whole goal of this channel was always to be a launching pad for new creators, filmmakers, and artists. This might come in the form of real-time creation, or it might be shorts or features that I license and share with the community.
If we do decide to collaborate, I also want to split ad revenue with these artists from day one. The average channel takes around 18 months to monetize, and that is not feasible for most creators. So if you have a finished film, check out VHF 21 and send me a screener. I will also have a sample contract right there, because no more gatekeeping.
I will also be going into production on my next feature, documenting as much of it as I can. So if you are a filmmaker or actor looking to start a YouTube channel, I would like to talk to you about how we could collaborate on my next feature film.
So what is the end goal now that I have written all this down? I guess it is to share. Thanks Mom.
I’ve always wanted to learn if we can build something meaningful within the companies that are trying to divide us. What would happen if you and your friends started a channel together? What could you create?
